Primary Sawmills pay the most for mature timber. Secondary Buyers (often those that send information in the mail & make "cold calls") are not normally the highest paying buyers for mature timber.
No significant current pine beetle problems to force harvests at this time. Last major beetle outbreak was 1995-96.
Pine prices have been moderate since 2012.
Hardwood lumber exports to China and Europe are key to the high prices paid for North Carolina hardwood timber.
Hardwood timber prices have risen at a steady pace since 1990, downturns have been for short periods followed by increases. Current hardwood prices are high in 2024, with White Oak the highest of all species.
Do not harvest young, vigorous oak & poplar stands that are increasing in value.
